Sadus is a name well known both as a place and as a subject, and it has been an important historic site through the ages. It was one of the most fertile villages of Al-Yamamah, famous for its produce and above all its pomegranates; geographers described its dense, productive orchards, saying that "if a thousand caravans came to it, they would make no visible dent in its harvest". Sadus was one of the towns with a pulpit, meaning it had a governor and a congregational mosque, and it was known for its position on the trade route of Al-Yamamah in pre-Islamic times and on the Hajj routes that crossed the region.

Sadus saw extensive building under the Saudi state, which continues to this day. It appears in local historical, geographical and literary sources and in the books of European and Arab travellers. It has kept the elements of authentic Najdi architecture in its houses, walls, gates, lanes and paths, its mosques, its water sources and the irrigation channels of its farms, and it has attracted Arab and foreign researchers. The local community has played an important part in preserving the town's built heritage, its crafts and its oral traditions. The surrounding landscape is varied: mountains, plateaus, valleys and ravines, with acacia trees of the talh and salam species and green areas, some permanent, some seasonal.

Together these qualities have made Sadus a place where visitors come to enjoy nature and historic architecture. The people of Sadus are proud of the initiatives they have launched to protect its architectural and natural heritage in line with Saudi Vision 2030, with the aim of making Sadus a leading heritage, tourism and economic destination, in cooperation with the Ministry of Culture and its commissions.

Sadus: a heritage coming back to life

We see in Sadus a heritage that can live, not just a site to preserve and restore.

We are presenting the village anew as a sustainable cultural and tourism destination that keeps its authenticity and creates new experiences bringing together history, place, community and Saudi culture.

Development that keeps the spirit of the place

Every new intervention a quiet extension of the place

The Sadus project rests on respect for the existing urban fabric and the human scale of the village: restoring buildings and historic features true to their origins, bringing houses and spaces back to life with cultural, hospitality and educational uses, improving lighting, walkways and squares, and a single system of routes and signs.
