Landscape around Sadus

Natural site

Dahl Ibn Rashid

An opening in the ground that leads into darkness and silence: one of the dahls of Sadus, known as Dahl Ibn Rashid.

What is a dahl?

In the speech of Najd, a dahl is a natural hollow or cave in the ground.

Dahl Ibn Rashid is one of the natural landmarks the people of Sadus count as part of their town's story, alongside its mountains, tracks and ravines.

What lies below

In Sadus, what lies underground has always mattered. Floods from the ravines of Wadi Watr water the farms and then refill the groundwater the town has always depended on.

A dahl is a small window onto that hidden world.

Before you go near

Caves call for care. Never go down into a dahl alone or without someone who knows it, carry a torch and keep away from crumbling edges.

Or simply look in from outside: the darkness, the echo and the change in the air are an experience in themselves.
