Landscape around Sadus

Natural site

Darb Abkain

The main road between Sadus and Al-Uyaynah, passing the two small hills that Al-Hamdani described in the fourth century AH: the Abkain.

Sadus is bounded to the west by the Tuwaiq escarpment and to the east by the twin Abkain hills, which gave the town natural protection. Al-Hamdani mentioned them: "you come to the village beyond the Abkain, two small horn-shaped hills".

The Abkain road

The Abkain road, also called Al-Rayy', is the main road linking Sadus with Al-Uyaynah.

When the historian Ibn Bishr set out the lands of Hasan bin Tawq, forefather of the Al Muammar family, he traced them from Al-Jubaila to Al-Uyaynah, to the Abkain, that is Al-Rayy', and on to Huraymila. That boundary places Sadus among the towns of Al-Uyaynah.

A rampart made by nature

The Abkain hills close Sadus to the east, as Tuwaiq closes it to the west, giving the town natural protection.

Just as walls and towers guarded the houses of Sadus, the hills guarded the whole town.

A pass towards Riyadh

Lorimer described the country east of Sadus: a plateau about 300 feet high, followed by the road to Riyadh through a pass that is narrow but not rough.

Narrow enough to shelter the town, easy enough to connect it with the world: that is the secret of this track.

On the track today

Walk the track and picture those who went before you: the people of Sadus on their way to Al-Uyaynah, the caravans, the visitors.

Set out early in the morning or in the late afternoon, carry plenty of water, wear shoes made for gravel and rock, and never go alone.
