Landscape around Sadus

Darb Habudal

An old track running through Shaib Al-Darb, a tributary of Aba Al-Hasak: one of the ways that tied Sadus to its neighbours long before asphalt.

In Shaib Al-Darb

Darb Habudal runs through Shaib Al-Darb, one of the tributaries of Aba Al-Hasak.

Even the name of the ravine, "the ravine of the track", tells you what it was for: a watercourse that became a route between the hills.

The tracks of Sadus

Sadus is tied to its surroundings by a web of old tracks: the Abkain road, or Al-Rayy', the main route to Al-Uyaynah; Darb Habudal; and the Malham track, which linked Malham, one of the best-known towns of the Shaib area, with Sadus and Al-Uyaynah.

Why the tracks mattered

An ancient overland road connected Sadus with neighbouring settlements, and its central position in Najd, astride one of the important routes of Arabia, played a real part in its growth.

Each of these tracks is a thread in that web.

Walking it today

The Sadus development project sees the mountain trails around the village as a chance for hiking, cycling and guided interpretive walks.

Set out early in the morning or in the late afternoon, carry plenty of water, wear shoes made for gravel and rock, and never go alone.
