A national park
Shaib Al-Luhaysiyah is home to Shaib Al-Luhaysiyah National Park, which the Sadus project presents as a destination for walking and seasonal trips.
In Najd a shaib is a watercourse running down between high ground: it flows when it rains and lies quiet the rest of the year.
The ravines after rain
Tamarisk and acacia trees grow along the banks of the ravines around Sadus. When it rains, desert plants appear: rabla, sabt, basbas, arta and arfaj.
On those days the ground changes colour, and a walk along the ravine becomes a stroll between green and stone.
Part of a day in Sadus
The Sadus experience does not stop at the village edge. Its oases, farms, valleys and mountains are a natural extension, open to walking, exploring, cycling and nature trips.
Start your day in the mud-brick lanes, then head out to the ravine as the light softens.
Before you set out
Set out early in the morning or in the late afternoon, carry plenty of water, wear shoes made for gravel and rock, and never go alone.
Leave no trace, respect the plants and wildlife, and keep out of the ravine beds when rain is expected.
